Where do we begin? Demographic data edition.

I've dedicated more brainpower than I'd like to admit on demographic data. Some of you who've worked with me are probably thinking, "There she goes again!" (I am looking at you, @cablandford) But, let me explain why it matters so much to me.

Early in my grad journey, a simple yet profound question was posed: "Does the program really 'work' for everyone? Why or why not?" 🔍 In my experience, outcomes often differ along racial, gender, or socioeconomic lines (at least for U.S. based programs).

I get it, collecting demographic data isn't always easy or comfortable. But if you're wondering where to start, here are some key questions I ask myself when evaluating programs:

1️⃣ What do our program's goals, mission and DEI statement say to guide our collection of demographic data? For example, do we have sub-groups of individuals we hope to include or support?

2️⃣ Why do we want this info, and how will we use it? Who can help us interpret findings? When will we review the findings?

3️⃣ Are program changes possible, if we do identify differences based on sub-groups? Who needs to be involved in deciding and implementing these changes?

4️⃣ How much detail do we need, and how can we tailor questions to meet various needs of constituents, the program, and funder?

5️⃣ Are our questions in sync with standards and cultural norms? How do we ensure consistency while respecting individual identities?

From my perspective, collecting, understanding, and using data to learn and change is crucial for programs and organizations to achieve their goals. Back in 2020, I collaborated with @nkirunnawulezi and @lamontbryant on a chapter about "Microaggressions in Human Service Organizations." We posit that programs and organizations cannot be completely free from microaggressions, but they can be "In View," — that is, actively self-correcting and disrupting supporting structures via their practices and policies. So here’s my challenge to you: How can your demographic data collection support your program in getting "In View?"
